In 2021, the Colorado (CO) legislature passed SB21-264 setting gas utility emission reduction targets to protect the climate and public health in an equitable manner.
The law required major gas utilities, including Xcel’s subsidiary - Public Service Co., to submit emission reduction plans to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) for review in 2023.
PSR Colorado and other organizations, agencies, and local governments made the case for decarbonization of Xcel’s gas utility.
The Public Utilities Commission June 2024 ruling requires Xcel to reduce emissions largely through building electrification.
